Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy

Professor Maurizio Salvadori graduated from the University of Florence in 1968.  In 1971, he became an assistant professor at the Renal Unit of Careggi University Hospital in Florence, and was nominated Professor of Nephrology at the University of Florence. By 1991, with the beginning of transplant activity, he was nominated chief of the Renal Transplant Department. He specialized in Endocrinology, Clinical Immunology and Nephrology. Over the last 20 years, he focused his clinical and scientific interest on new immunosuppressive drugs in transplantation. He took part in several international trials, often being the top enroller and the first name in the international published papers. Among these, he studied enteric coated mycophenolate sodium and FTY 720, both with publications in the American Journal of Transplantation. Recently he studied everolimus, published in Transplantation. Professor Salvadori is an author of more than 700 papers and contributions published on PubMed, often in cooperation with international colleagues. Recently, professor Salvadori left clinical activity because of age and Italian law, but he is still a member of the Renal Transplant Department and is a teaching professor of Nephrology at the University of Florence. He is member of the European Society of Organ Transplantation, the European Society of Nephrology, of the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Nephrology, and of the International Society of Transplantation and the International Society of Nephrology. Recently, he was nominated as the Italian member of the team for the new European Guidelines for Kidney Transplantation. The results of this work have been published in the European Journal of Nephrology and Transplantation. He is the person in charge for research on nephrological rare disease for the Tuscany Region. To date, he is editor in chief of World Journal of Transplantation and Expert reviewer for the Transplant Library, assistant editor to the Journal of Renal and Hepatic Disorders, a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Nephrology, and a member of the directory Board of Archives of Nephrology.

Collection Overview

Until quite recently, acute rejection represented the main cause of graft loss. Now, due to the enhanced control of acute rejection, other problems present a challenge in the field of renal transplantation and must be met with innovative approaches.

The demand for kidney transplants is consistently higher than can be met by the supply of donor organs. This has increasingly led clinicians to resort to using organs from more marginal donors, principally older donors. This fact represents the main cause of reduced long term graft outcome.

To control or avoid this outcome, several approaches and areas of inquiry are being explored. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Studies on tolerance in transplantation
  • Better knowledge of the pharmacogenomics of immunosuppressants
  • Improved molecular diagnosis of transplant damage through the development of biomarkers
  • New minimally invasive procedures
  • Diagnosis and prevention of antibody-mediated rejection
  • Advances in long-term immunosuppression, including new drugs with reduced side effects
  • Development and testing of artificial kidneys

This Methods Collection will highlight research and clinical methodology that addresses the current generation of challenges in the field of kidney transplantation.
