Xunwei Wu
Ningbo Stomatology Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College

Dr. Xunwei Wu earned his PhD from Fudan University in China and completed postdoctoral training at the Max Planck Institute in Germany and Harvard Medical School in the USA. His research focuses on the regeneration of human skin, specifically on culture-expanded skin stem cells. Dr. Wu and his team have developed a novel system to maintain the regenerative potential of stem cells during in vitro expansion. They have also established a humanized mouse model that features full-thickness human skin with mature hair follicles. This platform allows for advanced in vivo studies on skin diseases, wound healing, and the aging process.

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine rely heavily on the synergistic integration of biomaterials with living cells to reconstruct or replace damaged tissues. As the field rapidly evolves, there is a growing need for standardized, reproducible methods that span the entire workflow—from primary cell isolation and characterization to scaffold fabrication and cell–biomaterial interaction assessment.
This Methods Collection aims to provide the research community with detailed experimental protocols that support the development of functional tissue constructs. It will include techniques for isolating and expanding primary or stem cells, engineering and characterizing biomaterials (e.g., hydrogels, decellularized matrices, 3D-printed scaffolds), and evaluating cellular behavior within these platforms in vitro and in vivo. By consolidating these diverse methodologies, the collection will serve as a valuable resource for researchers working across disciplines. It will enhance reproducibility, accelerate translational applications, and promote innovation in regenerative medicine.
