Automated Workstation

An automated workstation is a programmable laboratory platform that performs routine experimental steps with limited manual intervention, improving consistency, throughput, and traceability. In bioengineering, robotic modules coordinate tasks such as liquid handling, sample transfer, reagent dispensing, incubation, and measurement according to predefined protocols, while integrated software controls timing, movement, and data capture. These systems support cell culture, assay development, biomaterial testing, and other workflows that require precise, repeatable processing across many samples. By reducing manual variability and enabling parallel experiments, automated workstations help researchers scale protocols, strengthen experimental reproducibility, and generate more reliable data for engineering biological systems.

Here, we present an automated plasma protein digestion method for mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomic analysis. In this protocol, the liquid transferring and incubation steps for protein denaturation, reduction, alkylation, and trypsin digestion reactions are streamlined and automated. It takes approximately five hours to prepare a 96-well plate with desired precision.

2016

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.

High-throughput, Automated Extraction of DNA and RNA from Clinical Samples using TruTip Technology on Common Liquid Handling Robots
