Laser Pointer Setup

Laser pointer setup is the controlled placement, alignment, and operation of a low-power laser device so its beam can serve as a stable visual or optical reference. The procedure typically secures the pointer in a mount, adjusts its position and orientation to establish a reproducible beam path, and verifies alignment with the target while limiting exposure and reflections. In bioengineering, a properly configured setup supports calibration and alignment of imaging systems, illumination paths, and optical measurement arrangements. Careful setup improves repeatability, protects samples and users, and provides a dependable foundation for experiments that use light to observe or manipulate biological systems.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

Laser-guided Neuronal Tracing In Brain Explants

2015

We describe a technique to label neurons and their processes via anterograde or retrograde tracer injections into brain nuclei using an in vitro preparation. We modified an existing method of in vitro tracer electroporation by taking advantage of fluorescently labeled mouse mutants and basic optical equipment in order to increase labeling accuracy.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

Here, we present the mouse laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) protocol, an experimental model that re-creates the vascular hallmarks of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Once mastered, it can reliably and effectively induce CNV as a model system to test various experimental measures.
