Syringe Pump Calibration

Syringe pump calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting a pump so it delivers fluid at the programmed volume and flow rate, supporting accurate and reproducible bioengineering experiments. Calibration compares the commanded delivery with the measured output, accounting for factors such as syringe size, plunger movement, flow resistance, and operating conditions; corrective adjustments or performance records can then reduce systematic error. Reliable calibration is essential for cell culture, microfluidics, drug-delivery studies, and tissue-engineering workflows, where small dosing or flow deviations can alter experimental results. Regular verification also improves data quality, instrument performance, and confidence in quantitative biological measurements.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Glassware Calibration

Accurate calibration of glassware, such as volumetric flasks, pipettes, and burettes, is essential to ensure accurate measurements in the analytical laboratory. Calibration helps maintain consistency across measurements and prevents errors arising from inaccurate volumes. Volumetric flasks: Volumetric flasks are designed to prepare aqueous solutions of precise volumes accurately with a calibration line on the neck. To calibrate a volumetric flask, it is important to fill it with distilled...

ATP Driven Pumps III: V-type Pumps

2023

V-type pumps are ATP-driven pumps found in the vacuolar membranes of plants, yeast, endosomal and lysosomal membranes of animal cells, plasma membranes of a few specialized eukaryotic cells, and some prokaryotes. They are also known as the V1Vo-ATPase, that couple ATP hydrolysis to transport protons against a concentration gradient. The peripheral or cytosolic V1 domain with eight subunits is involved in ATP hydrolysis. The integral or transmembrane V0 domain containing at least five subunits...
