Adipose Capsule

The adipose capsule is a layer of fatty connective tissue that surrounds and supports certain organs, most notably the kidneys, where it forms part of the protective coverings. Composed primarily of adipocytes within connective tissue, it cushions the organ against mechanical forces, helps conserve heat, and contributes to structural stabilization by filling the space between the organ and surrounding fascia. In renal anatomy, the adipose capsule lies outside the fibrous renal capsule and inside the renal fascia, helping maintain kidney position within the abdominal cavity. Understanding its organization is important for studying organ protection, anatomical relationships, and conditions that alter retroperitoneal fat.

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) have the potential to treat a myriad of different diseases. The utility of these cells lies in the fact that they can differentiate into any cell type in the body. Here we describe the teratoma assay, which is used to demonstrate the pluripotence of hPSCs.

Separation of Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient

Source: Feltwell, T., et.al. Separating Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the use of a discontinuous density gradient to separate bacterial strains based on capsule amount. By centrifuging a transposon mutant library through the gradient, bacteria with different capsule densities localize to distinct layers. The separated fractions can then be collected for downstream analysis.

Extracting Intact Kidney from Mouse: A Technique to Obtain Kidney Without Renal Capsule from Murine Models

In this video, we describe the procedure for kidney extraction from the retroperitoneal space of the mouse. The extracted kidney can further be microdissected to obtain an intact kidney without a renal capsule and the surrounding fat layer.

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Bacteria are diverse microorganisms found nearly everywhere on Earth. Many properties help distinguish them from each other, including but not limited to Gram-staining type, shape and arrangement, production of capsule, and formation of spores. To observe these properties, one...

Isolating Adipose-Derived Stem Cells from Murine Periaortic Adipose Tissue

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for isolating and culturing fluorescently labeled neural crest-derived adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) from murine periaortic arch adipose tissue. Following isolation, the NCADSCs are detected, sorted using fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and subsequently cultured on a plate, promoting cell proliferation.
