Axonal Transport

Axonal transport is the movement of proteins, organelles, vesicles, and other cellular materials along a neuron’s axon, a process essential for maintaining communication and survival over long distances. Motor proteins such as kinesin and dynein carry cargo along microtubules in anterograde transport from the cell body toward the axon terminal and retrograde transport back to the cell body. This system supplies synapses with neurotransmitter components, removes cellular waste, and relays signals about axonal health. Studying axonal transport helps explain neuronal development, regeneration, and diseases in which transport defects contribute to degeneration.
