Bovine Lens

The bovine lens is a transparent, biconvex tissue in the eye that refracts and focuses incoming light onto the retina, making it a useful model for studying vertebrate vision. Its elongated, tightly packed fiber cells contain concentrated crystallin proteins and lack blood vessels, preserving optical clarity while producing a gradient in refractive index across the lens. Because the lens grows throughout life and cannot readily replace damaged fibers, changes in crystallin structure, hydration, or cellular organization can reduce transparency and alter focusing. Bovine lenses support research on lens development, protein aggregation, cataract formation, biomechanics, and the optical properties of biological tissues.

Lens Transplantation in Zebrafish and its Application in the Analysis of Eye Mutants

Lens development involves interactions with other tissues. Several zebrafish eye mutants are characterized by an abnormally small lens size. Here we demonstrate a lens transplantation experiment to determine whether this phenotype is due to intrinsic causes or defective interactions with tissues that surround the lens.
