Cortex Aspiration

Cortex aspiration is a surgical lesioning technique that removes a defined region of the cerebral cortex, allowing researchers to examine how cortical tissue contributes to behavior and neural function. After the skull is opened, a suction cannula aspirates the targeted cortical tissue to create a localized lesion, whose position and extent can be assessed histologically. In biology and neuroscience, this method supports studies of cortical organization, brain-behavior relationships, neural plasticity, and functional recovery. Comparing animals with aspiration lesions to intact controls can reveal the consequences of losing specific cortical areas and inform broader models of brain function.
