Cotton-tipped Applicator

A cotton-tipped applicator is a slender sampling and transfer tool with a fiber-wrapped tip, used to collect, apply, or move small amounts of biological material. Its absorbent cotton fibers capture cells, microorganisms, secretions, or surface residues through contact, then release them into culture media, transport tubes, microscope slides, or other test areas. In biology, cotton-tipped applicators support specimen collection, inoculation, staining, and environmental sampling, although the material and handling conditions must suit the organism and downstream analysis. Proper technique helps limit contamination and preserve sample integrity, making this simple tool valuable in teaching laboratories, clinical workflows, and research.

Fabricating Cotton Analytical Devices

2016

To investigate simple fabrication approaches for multiple assay needs, we created a fluid-absorbing channel system made of cotton material. This device was used to establish a multiple detection platform, and solve contamination issues that commonly affect lateral flow-based biomedical devices, for clinical urinalysis of nitrite, total protein, and urobilinogen.

Agrobacterium-Mediated Virus-Induced Gene Silencing Assay In Cotton

We present the detailed protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay in cotton. The tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-derived VIGS vectors were deployed to induce RNA silencing of cotton GrCLA1, Cloroplastos alterados 1 gene. The albino phenotype caused by silencing GrCLA1 was observed at the seedling stage within 2 weeks after inoculation.

Screening Cotton Genotypes for Reniform Nematode Resistance

2019

Here, a protocol is presented for the rapid non-destructive screening of cotton genotypes for reniform nematode resistance. The protocol involves visually examining the roots of nematode-infected cotton seedlings to determine infection response. The vegetative shoot from each plant is then propagated to recover plants for seed production.

Methods for a wide-scale central nervous system gene delivery in the rat are covered. In this example, the purpose is to mimic a disease that affects the entire spinal cord. The widespread transduction can be used to deliver a therapeutic protein to the CNS from a one-time, peripheral administration.
