Digital Imaging Egg Count

Digital imaging egg count is a biological measurement method that uses photographs or microscope images to determine the number of eggs in a sample. The process typically captures images under controlled conditions and applies image-processing steps, such as contrast enhancement, object segmentation, and shape-based classification, to distinguish eggs from surrounding material and enumerate them. This approach can improve counting speed, consistency, and documentation compared with manual inspection, particularly when samples contain many eggs. In biology, digital egg counting supports studies of reproduction, development, population biology, and experimental treatment effects while providing image records for verification and further analysis.

The Drosophila egg chamber is an excellent model for studying the mechanisms of mRNA localization. In order to capture the dynamic events that underpin the processes of localization, rapid high resolution imaging of live tissue is required. Here, we present a protocol for dissection and imaging of live samples with minimal disruption.
