This study demonstrates the use of transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans to visualize neuronal activity during egg-laying behavior using calcium indicators. The method allows for the observation of calcium influx in neurons and its correlation with egg release events.
This method enables real-time correlation of neuronal calcium dynamics with behavioral outputs in a genetically tractable model, supporting target validation in neuropharmacology. By linking intracellular signaling to phenotypic readouts, it provides a platform for mechanistic de-risking of CNS-active compounds. The approach supports early discovery by offering quantitative, reproducible readouts of neuronal activation relevant to screening and lead optimization.
The method fits within the discovery continuum from target hypothesis testing through lead identification to preclinical validation by providing dynamic, real-time neuronal activity data linked to behavioral phenotypes.
