Drosophila Primary Cells

Drosophila primary cells are cells isolated directly from Drosophila tissues and maintained outside the organism for biological study, providing experimental models that can retain features of their tissue of origin. Researchers typically dissect or dissociate tissues, place the released cells in a suitable culture environment, and monitor their survival, signaling, growth, or differentiation under controlled conditions. Because these cells capture aspects of in vivo physiology while allowing direct manipulation, they support studies of development, immunity, metabolism, genetics, and cell-cell interactions. In biology research, Drosophila primary cells complement whole-animal experiments by linking molecular mechanisms to cellular responses and enabling targeted imaging or functional assays.

We provide a detailed protocol for preparing primary cells dissociated from Drosophila embryos. The ability to carry out the effective RNAi perturbation, together with other molecular, biochemical and cell imaging methods will allow a variety of questions to be addressed in Drosophila primary cells.
