Extracellular Neural Activity

Extracellular neural activity refers to electrical signals generated by neurons and detected outside their cell membranes, providing a noninvasive view of communication within nervous tissue. When action potentials and synaptic currents move through neural circuits, they produce voltage changes in the surrounding extracellular space that recording electrodes can measure as spikes or local field potentials. These recordings help characterize neuronal firing, network synchronization, sensory processing, and brain responses in biological research. Extracellular electrophysiology also supports studies of neurological disorders, neural interfaces, and brain-machine systems by linking circuit activity to behavior and evaluating how neural signals change under different conditions.

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.
