Food Metabolism

Food metabolism is the network of biochemical processes that breaks down nutrients and converts them into energy, cellular building blocks, or stored reserves, making it essential for maintaining life and physiological function. After digestion and absorption, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins enter interconnected pathways such as glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation, where enzymes regulate their transformation and ATP production. Hormones and nutrient availability adjust these pathways to balance energy use and storage. Studying food metabolism helps explain nutrition, growth, exercise responses, and metabolic disorders, while supporting research into obesity, diabetes, and strategies for improving health.

What is Metabolism?

2019

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. Metabolism Is the Sum of All of the Chemical Reactions That Take Place in an Organism

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

Testing For Genetically Modified Foods

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...
