Germanium Window

Germanium windows are optical components made from crystalline germanium that transmit selected infrared wavelengths, making them important in spectroscopy and imaging of biological materials. Their mechanism depends on germanium’s broad infrared transmission range and high refractive index: infrared radiation passes through the polished window, while the material blocks most visible light, and surface coatings can reduce reflection and improve throughput. In biology, germanium windows can support Fourier-transform infrared measurements and infrared imaging by separating samples or instrument components from the optical path without strongly absorbing diagnostic radiation. These measurements help assess molecular composition, chemical bonds, and structural changes in cells, tissues, or biomolecules.

This work details the procedures for the growth and characterization of crystalline SrTiO3 directly on germanium substrates by atomic layer deposition. The procedure illustrates the ability of an all-chemical growth method to integrate oxides monolithically onto semiconductors for metal-oxide semiconductor devices.

Here we describe a simple method for patterning oxide-free silicon and germanium with reactive organic monolayers and demonstrate functionalization of the patterned substrates with small molecules and proteins. The approach completely protects surfaces from chemical oxidation, provides precise control over feature morphology, and provides ready access to chemically discriminated patterns.

We present the high-temperature synthesis of intermetallic precursors K4Ge9, their dissolution in ethylenediamine to form Ge94- deltahedral Zintl ions, and the reaction of the clusters with alkynes to form organo-Zintl ions. The latter are characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry in solutions and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state.
