Gut Content Analysis

Gut content analysis is a biological method for identifying and quantifying material found in an organism’s digestive tract, providing direct evidence of feeding and digestion. Researchers typically collect and dissect gut contents, then use visual identification, microscopy, or molecular techniques to characterize food items, prey remains, and other ingested materials. In biology, this approach helps reveal diet composition, feeding preferences, trophic relationships, and resource use across species or life stages. When combined with environmental data or complementary dietary methods, gut content analysis supports studies of animal ecology, digestive function, food webs, and changes in feeding behavior.

Most common gut content analyses of macroinvertebrates are visual. Requiring intense knowledge about morphological diversity of prey organisms, they miss soft bodied prey and, due to strong comminution of prey, are nearly impossible for some organisms, including amphipods. We provide detailed, novel genetic approaches for macroinvertebrate prey identification in the diet of amphipods.

2013

A method for the determination of fatty acid content and composition in microalgae based on mechanical cell disruption, solvent based lipid extraction, transesterification, and quantification and identification of fatty acids using gas chromatography is described. A tripentadecanoin internal standard is used to compensate for the possible losses during extraction and incomplete transesterification.
