Healing Complications

Healing complications are disruptions or abnormal outcomes that prevent tissue repair from progressing normally, making them important in biology and medicine. They arise when coordinated stages of wound healing, including inflammation, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and extracellular-matrix remodeling, become prolonged, impaired, or excessive. Infection, inadequate blood supply, wound separation, and uncontrolled collagen deposition can delay closure or produce chronic wounds and excessive scarring. Understanding these mechanisms helps researchers investigate tissue repair and enables clinicians to recognize risk factors, improve wound management, and develop therapies that restore effective healing while limiting harmful inflammation and fibrosis.

Healing II: Complications

Complications during healing arise when tissue repair is altered by local or systemic factors. These changes involve abnormal collagen deposition, altered biomechanics, and reduced vascular supply, impairing restoration of normal structure and function.Loss of FunctionScar tissue differs significantly from the original tissue it replaces. In the skin, fibrosis lacks adnexal structures such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. Their absence reduces tactile sensitivity, impairs...

DialyzersA hemodialysis (HD) dialyzer is a plastic cartridge containing thousands of parallel hollow fibers, which serve as semipermeable membranes. These fibers are typically made from cellulose-based or other synthetic materials. During HD, blood is pumped into the top of the cartridge and distributed among these fibers. Simultaneously, dialysis fluid, known as dialysate, is introduced into the bottom of the cartridge, bathing the outside of the fibers. Across the semipermeable membrane,...
