Heterogeneous Reactions

Heterogeneous reactions are chemical reactions in which reactants occupy different physical phases, such as a solid and a liquid, or occur at an interface between materials. The reaction proceeds when molecules or ions reach the boundary, adsorb or interact with surface-active sites, undergo bond rearrangement, and then release products; reaction rate therefore depends on surface area, transport, and interface conditions. In biology, this framework helps explain processes involving cell membranes, mineral surfaces, biological particles, and immobilized enzymes, where phase boundaries influence catalysis and molecular exchange. Studying heterogeneous reactions supports analysis of metabolism, environmental transformations, biomaterials, and engineered systems that mimic or control biological interfaces.

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

Heterogeneous Catalysis

2026

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

Here we describe a method to quantify molecular heterogeneity in histological sections of tumor material using quantitative immunofluorescence, image analysis, and a statistical measure of heterogeneity. The method is intended for use in clinical biomarker development and analysis.

Single-Cell Western Blotting to Determine Cell Heterogeneity

2025

The video describes a single-cell western blotting technique that identifies the composition of individual cells captured on a single-cell western blotting chip in a heterogeneous suspension. The technique detects the fluorescence intensity of the fluorophore tagged to a protein marker specific to the target cell.

Sampling Soils in a Heterogeneous Research Plot

The traditional soil-sampling procedure determines the number of soil samples arbitrarily. Here, we provide a simple yet efficient clustered soil-sampling design to demonstrate soil spatial heterogeneity and quantitatively determine the number of soil samples required and the associated sampling accuracy.
