Inner Ear Dissection

Inner ear dissection is an anatomical technique used to expose and examine the cochlea, vestibular apparatus, auditory nerve, and surrounding temporal bone structures. By carefully removing overlying bone and separating delicate tissues, investigators can trace how sound-related and balance-related structures connect and function within the enclosed inner ear. In biology, this procedure supports the study of hearing, equilibrium, sensory transduction, and developmental anatomy. It also provides a foundation for examining inner-ear disease, evaluating tissue damage, and relating microscopic organization to auditory or vestibular disorders.

The inner ear sensory epithelium of adult zebrafish is a good model system for understanding the mechanisms of hair cell regeneration in adult vertebrates. This protocol demonstrates the fine dissection of the epithelia, through which we can get tissue samples for studying the regenerative events at cellular and subcellular levels.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...

Canalostomy for Local Drug Delivery into the Inner Ear of an Adult Mouse

This video showcases canalostomy, a procedure that allows local drug delivery into the inner ear of a mouse through the semicircular canal with minimal damage to hearing and vestibular function. This method enables the inoculation of viral vectors, pharmaceuticals, and small molecules into the mouse's inner ear.
