Mobile Physiology Laboratory

A Mobile Physiology Laboratory is a portable research and teaching facility that brings physiological measurement beyond a fixed laboratory, enabling biological function to be studied in classrooms, field sites, or community settings. It combines transportable instruments, standardized procedures, and controlled data collection to assess variables such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, or physical performance under defined conditions. In biology, this approach supports hands-on instruction and field-based investigations while reducing the need for participants or specimens to travel to specialized facilities. Mobile laboratories also improve access to physiological research, allow measurements in natural environments, and help connect experimental principles with organismal health and function.

In this report we demonstrate techniques that can be used to investigate the biology of the crayfish hindgut. We show how to dissect a crayfish abdomen and study the associated anatomy, physiology and modulation of activity. The peristaltic activity and strength of contractions are measured using a force transducer.

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

2023

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...
