Mutation Rate Calculation

Mutation rate calculation is a method for estimating the frequency at which new genetic changes arise in a population or lineage over a defined number of generations. It typically combines mutation counts from sequencing or fluctuation assays with the number of cells, genomes, genes, or replication events examined, while accounting for detection errors and changes removed by selection. These estimates can be expressed per nucleotide, gene, genome, or generation. Mutation rate calculation supports comparisons of genetic stability, evolutionary change, antimicrobial resistance, cancer progression, and experimental populations, helping researchers interpret adaptation and model how variation accumulates over time.

Calculating Internal Rate of Return

2024

The IRR is the discount rate that makes a project or investment's Net Present Value (NPV) equal to zero. For instance, consider a renewable energy company evaluating a project that requires an initial investment of $200,000, with expected annual cash flows of $50,000 over the next six years. To determine the IRR for this project, the NPV is computed for different rates on a trial-and-error basis using a financial calculator or an Excel spreadsheet. At a 10% discount rate, the NPV is $17,763,...

Calculating Marginal Rate of Substitution

2024

The marginal rate of substitution, or MRS, is the rate at which a consumer is ready to give up one product in exchange for another while maintaining the same satisfaction. Formula MRS for two goods, X and Y, is denoted as MRS of X for Y. It is the quotient of change in the quantity of Good Y and the quantity of Good X while maintaining the same level of satisfaction. MRSXY = – (ΔY/ ΔX) Where, MRSXY is MRS of X for Y ΔY is the change in the quantity of Good Y ΔX is the change in the quantity of...

Calculating Average Rate of Return

2024

The Average Rate of Return (ARR) is helpful for businesses evaluating potential investments or capital expenditures. This metric, expressed as a percentage, shows the expected annual return on investment compared to its initial cost. For instance, imagine a manufacturing company investing $300,000 in new machinery. The machinery is projected to generate an additional $60,000 in annual profits over the next five years. The total profit over the lifespan of the investment is $300,000. By dividing...

Here, a protocol is presented to perform a fluctuation assay and estimate microbial mutation rate using phenotypic markers. This protocol will enable researchers to assay mutations in diverse microbes and environments, determining how genotype and ecological context affect spontaneous mutation rates.

Viral Mutations

A mutation is a change in the sequence of bases of DNA or RNA in a genome. Some mutations occur during replication of the genome due to errors made by the polymerase enzymes that replicate DNA or RNA. Unlike DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase is prone to errors because it is not capable of “proofreading” its work. Viruses with RNA-based genomes, like HIV, therefore accrue mutations faster than viruses with DNA-based genomes. Because mutation and recombination provide the raw material for adaptive...
