Nitrogen Metabolic Labeling

Nitrogen metabolic labeling is a method for tracking how nitrogen moves through biological systems and becomes incorporated into cellular molecules. It typically supplies cells, tissues, or organisms with nitrogen-containing compounds enriched in a stable isotope such as ^15N, allowing researchers to follow its incorporation into amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, and other metabolites using mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance. In biology, this approach reveals nitrogen uptake, assimilation, recycling, and allocation across metabolic pathways. It supports studies of nutrient use, microbial and plant metabolism, protein turnover, and disease-related metabolic changes, while helping connect molecular transformations to broader physiological outcomes.

Metabolic Labeling

2023

Metabolic labeling is used to probe the biochemical transformations and modifications that occur in a cell. This is accomplished by using chemical analogs that mimic the structure of natural biomolecules. Cells utilize analogs in their endogenous biochemical processes, producing compounds that are labeled. The label allows for the incorporation of detection and affinity tags, which can then be used to elucidate metabolic pathways using other biochemical analytical techniques, such as SDS-PAGE...

Overview of Nitrogen Metabolism

2023

Nitrogen is a very important element for life because it is a major constituent of proteins and nucleic acids. It is a macronutrient, and in nature, it is recycled from organic compounds and stored in the form of ammonia, ammonium ions, nitrate, nitrite, or nitrogen gas by many metabolic processes. Many of these metabolic processes are carried out only by prokaryotes. The largest pool of nitrogen available in the terrestrial ecosystem is gaseous nitrogen (N2) from the air, but this nitrogen...
