Yeast Mating

Yeast mating is a form of sexual reproduction in which compatible haploid yeast cells recognize one another, fuse, and produce a diploid cell, making it a useful model for studying cell communication and inheritance. In budding yeast, mating-type cells release and detect peptide pheromones that activate receptor signaling, reorganize the cytoskeleton, and direct polarized growth toward a partner before cell fusion. The resulting diploid cells can undergo meiosis under nutrient-limited conditions, generating genetic diversity through spore formation. Research on yeast mating has clarified fundamental principles of signal transduction, cell polarity, membrane fusion, and sexual reproduction, with applications in genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast that is an extremely valuable model organism. Importantly, S. cerevisiae is a unicellular eukaryote that undergoes many of the same biological processes as humans. This video provides an introduction to the yeast cell cycle, and explains how S. cerevisiae reproduces both asexually and sexually Yeast reproduce asexually through a process known as budding. In contrast, yeast sometimes participate in sexual reproduction, which is important because...

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...
