Piloting Strategy

A piloting strategy is a structured approach to testing a research plan on a small scale before committing to a full biological study. It evaluates whether protocols, sampling methods, instruments, timelines, and data-collection procedures work as intended, allowing researchers to identify practical problems and refine experimental conditions through iteration. In biology, pilot studies can improve feasibility, reproducibility, and resource planning while helping investigators assess variability and optimize study design. This process supports more reliable experiments, reduces avoidable errors, and provides evidence for selecting methods and establishing realistic requirements for larger investigations.

Pilot Testing

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University In any experiment researchers have the challenge of creating experiences for participants that are consistent (i.e., reliable) and authentic (i.e., valid). Yet there are many ways to manipulate any one variable. For example, if you want participants to feel sad, you can have them think of their own sad memory, watch a sad video, or read a sad story. Researchers must find the best way to...

Pilot and Numeric Relaying

2024

Pilot relaying is a type of differential protection used in power systems. It compares electrical quantities at the terminals of equipment via a communication channel instead of direct relay interconnection. This method is essential for transmission lines where the terminals are far apart, typically up to 80 km for lines with 69 to 115 kV ratings. Four types of communication channels are used for pilot relaying: Pilot Wires: These are separate electrical circuits operating at DC, 50 to 60 Hz,...

Set-shifting, a form of behavioral flexibility, requires an attentional shift from one stimulus dimension to another. We extended an established rodent set-shifting task1 by requiring attention to different stimuli according to context. The task was combined with specific lesions to identify neuron subtypes underlying a successful shift.
