Plate Reader Incubation

Plate reader incubation is the controlled maintenance of samples in microplates within a plate reader so biological reactions can be monitored over time. During incubation, the instrument maintains programmed conditions such as temperature and may provide shaking, while its optical system repeatedly measures signals including absorbance, fluorescence, or luminescence without removing the plate. This approach supports kinetic analysis of enzyme activity, cell growth, viability, reporter gene expression, and biochemical reactions. By combining incubation with automated measurements, plate readers generate time-resolved data, reduce manual handling, and improve consistency in experiments ranging from undergraduate biology laboratories to drug screening and research assay development.

Introduction to the Microplate Reader

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

2025

This video demonstrates a method for prolonged incubation of neuronal tissue of the retina. Eyecups containing retina are obtained from a mouse eye; the inner limiting membrane (ILM) is enzymatically digested to expose the neuronal cells of the retina, and either the treated eyecup or the isolated retina is transferred to a specialized incubator for prolonged incubation at a low temperature.
