Prostatic Urethra

The prostatic urethra is the section of the male urethra that passes through the prostate, connecting the bladder neck with the membranous urethra. Its lumen is lined by specialized epithelium and receives secretions from prostatic ducts and the ejaculatory ducts, allowing it to conduct urine and semen at different stages of reproductive and urinary function. Smooth muscle in the prostate and surrounding urinary sphincter helps regulate flow, while prostate enlargement can compress this passage and obstruct urination. Studying the prostatic urethra supports understanding of male reproductive anatomy, urinary disorders, prostate disease, and urologic diagnostic procedures.

The urethra is a hollowed tubular organ through which urine is expelled from the body. This structure extends from the bladder to the external opening, allowing urine to be released. The anatomy of the urethra differs between males and females. In females, the urethra is short, measuring about 3–4 cm in length, and opens anterior to the vaginal opening. In males, the urethra is longer and passes through the penis, serving dual purposes: expelling urine and ejaculating semen. The male urethra is...

Infection of the prostate may be a contributing factor in mediating pelvic pain in chronic prostatitis. We describe the procedure for preparation of standardized bacterial inoculum, instillation of bacteria into the urethra of male mice and methodology for measuring tactile allodynia in mice over time.
