Mouse Gut

The mouse gut is the continuous digestive tract that processes food, absorbs nutrients, and supports interactions between host tissues and resident microorganisms. Its coordinated activity includes mechanical mixing, enzymatic digestion, nutrient transport across the intestinal epithelium, and microbial fermentation, while immune and barrier functions help regulate exposure to gut contents. Because its anatomy, physiology, microbiota, and immune responses can be studied under controlled conditions, the mouse gut is a valuable model in biology. Research using this system helps investigate digestion, intestinal inflammation, host-microbe interactions, metabolic disease, and responses to diet or therapeutics, while informing broader studies of gastrointestinal function.

Intracranial Injection of Gut-Derived Microbial Metabolites in a Mouse Model

2025

Source: Liou, C. et al. Intracerebroventricular Delivery of Gut-Derived Microbial Metabolites in Freely Moving Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the intracranial injection of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in a freely moving mouse to study their effects on brain-mediated behavior. An injector cannula is inserted into a guide cannula implanted in the mouse brain. After recovery, the mouse acclimates in a novel cage. SCFAs are then administered, and locomotor behavior is recorded.

Whole Mount Preparation of Mouse Intestine: Using a Simple Gut-incising Device to Prepare Whole Mount

2023

In this video, we demonstrate whole mount preparation of the mouse intestine using a simple gut-incising device. The resulting mounts are of superior and uniform quality and can be used for histological analyses.

Extracting DNA from the Gut Microbes of the Termite (Zootermopsis Angusticollis) and Visualizing Gut Microbes

This video illustrates the technique for extracting DNA from the species of microbes resident in the termite hindgut. The preparation of a wet mount slide, which is useful for visualizing the gut microbial community is also illustrated, and a tour through the species-rich gut environment is given.

Assessing the Role of Gut Microbiota in Modulating Hepatitis B Infection in Mice

2026

Take a control mouse with a normal gut microbiota and an experimental mouse with depleted gut microbiota. The depletion compromises the integrity of the gut barrier. This enables bacteria to translocate through the blood vessel into the liver tissue.Inject both mice with the hepatitis B virus or HBV plasmid to induce an HBV infection in the liver tissue. In the control mouse, the T cell detects an infected liver cell through the interaction of its receptors with viral antigens, and produces...

Oral Gavage in Neonatal Mouse Pups and Functional Assessment of Gut Barrier Integrity Using Ussing Chambers

2026

This article describes: (1) oral gavage delivery of test molecules to neonatal mice as early as DOL 6; and (2) ex vivo evaluation of colonic epithelial barrier function in biopsies from DOL 10 to weaning (DOL 20) pups by assessing paracellular and transcellular permeability with Ussing chambers.
