Swab Sample Processing

Swab sample processing is the laboratory workflow used to recover, preserve, and prepare biological material collected on a swab for downstream analysis. It typically involves transferring the swab into a suitable transport medium, releasing cells, microorganisms, or nucleic acids through agitation or chemical lysis, and removing debris before testing. In biology, processed swab samples support microscopy, culture, immunoassays, and molecular methods such as PCR, depending on the target and sample type. Careful handling, appropriate storage, and contamination control help maintain analyte integrity and improve the reliability of results in clinical, environmental, and research applications.
