Therapeutic Potential

The therapeutic potential of a biological molecule, cell, pathway, or intervention is its capacity to prevent, manage, or treat disease and improve patient outcomes. In biology, this potential is assessed by determining how an intervention changes specific molecular or cellular mechanisms, such as correcting a defect, regulating immune signaling, replacing damaged cells, or blocking pathogen growth, while maintaining acceptable safety and specificity. Evaluating therapeutic potential connects basic research with drug development, gene and cell therapies, regenerative medicine, and personalized treatment strategies. Evidence from laboratory models and clinical studies helps establish efficacy, limitations, and the conditions required for translation into practice.

2016

A simple and general method for the synthesis of cyclic peptides using microwave irradiation is outlined. This procedure enables the synthesis of backbone cyclic peptides with a collection of different conformations while retaining the side chains and the pharmacophoric moieties., and therefore, allows to screen for the bioactive conformation.

Natural Killer T cells (NKT) are critical determinants of the immune response to cancer, regulation of autioimmunity, clearance of infection, and the development of artheriosclerotic plaques. In this interview, Mitch Kronenberg discusses his laboratory's efforts to understand the mechanism through which NKT cells are activated by glycolipid antigens.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...
