Antibody Gene Assembly

Antibody gene assembly is the process of constructing immunoglobulin genes that encode antibodies, enabling B cells to generate receptors with diverse antigen specificities. During B-cell development, the RAG1 and RAG2 enzymes join selected variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) DNA segments through V(D)J recombination; imprecise junction formation further expands sequence diversity. The assembled genes are transcribed and expressed as antibody chains, allowing immune cells to recognize a broad range of molecular targets. Understanding this process supports research on immune development, antibody diversity, immunodeficiency, autoimmune disease, vaccine responses, and the engineering of therapeutic antibodies.
