Uterine Spiral Arterioles

Uterine spiral arterioles are small, coiled arteries in the endometrium that supply blood to the uterine lining and, during pregnancy, the developing placenta. Under hormonal control, they undergo cyclical changes and are remodeled as pregnancy progresses: trophoblast invasion and loss of normal muscular and vasoconstrictive properties convert them into wider, low-resistance vessels that deliver maternal blood to the intervillous space. This adaptation supports placental exchange while helping regulate oxygen and nutrient delivery to the fetus. Abnormal remodeling is associated with impaired placentation and conditions such as preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, making spiral arterioles important in reproductive biology, placental research, and maternal cardiovascular studies.

Many vision-threatening ocular diseases are associated with dysfunctional retinal microvessels. Therefore, the measurement of retinal arteriole responses is important to investigate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. This article describes a detailed protocol for mouse retinal arteriole isolation and preparation to assess the effects of vasoactive substances on vascular diameter.

Culturing Murine Spiral Ganglion Neuron Explants on Multielectrode Arrays

This video demonstrates the process for isolating spiral ganglion explants from the inner ear and co-culturing them with the organ of Corti on a multielectrode array. Spiral ganglia are carefully extracted and sectioned into smaller tissue sections or explants. These explants are cultured on the multielectrode array's active area to promote neuronal process outgrowth.

Arteries, the vasculature responsible for transporting blood from the heart, possess robust walls capable of enduring the elevated pressures exerted by the heartbeat. Arteries near the heart are especially thick-walled and enriched with elastic fibers across their three tunics, classifying them as elastic or conducting arteries. These arteries, usually with a diameter exceeding 10 mm, are characterized by their ability to dilate in response to the blood pumped from the heart's ventricles and...
