Vesicle Nucleating Peptide

A vesicle nucleating peptide is a short peptide that initiates or promotes the formation of lipid-bounded vesicles, providing a molecular handle for studying membrane organization and assembly. Its amphiphilic structure allows it to associate with lipid molecules or bilayers, where peptide-lipid interactions can lower the energetic barrier for membrane bending, curvature generation, budding, and closure into a vesicle. In biology and biomolecular engineering, these peptides help clarify how membranes form and remodel, while supporting the design of synthetic cells, model membrane systems, and potential cargo-delivery platforms. Their behavior also informs research on self-assembly and membrane-based compartmentalization.

2025

This article presents a method for preparing compound Giant Unilamellar Vesicles (cGUVs) with a vesicle-in-vesicle structure, with customized electrical conductivity in inner, annular, and outer regions. Electroformation synthesizes simple GUVs, which are transformed into stomatocytes and cGUVs via osmotic shock, providing a valuable model for studying the biophysics of nucleated cells.
