Methyl Radical

The methyl radical is a highly reactive, electrically neutral species with one unpaired electron and the formula •CH3, making it an important intermediate in chemistry. It forms when a carbon-hydrogen or carbon-carbon bond in methane or another methyl-containing compound undergoes homolytic cleavage, often through heat, light, or radical reactions. Because its unpaired electron promotes rapid hydrogen abstraction, addition, and combination reactions, the methyl radical participates in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, plasma processes, and organic synthesis. Studying its structure, reactivity, and short lifetime helps researchers understand chain reactions, pollutant formation, and the behavior of reactive intermediates.

DNA Methylation Analysis

2023

Methylation at CpG dinucleotides is a chemical modification of DNA hypothesized to play important roles in regulating gene expression. In particular, the methylation of clusters of methylation sites, called “CpG islands”, near promoters and other gene regulatory elements may contribute to the stable silencing of genes, for example, during epigenetic processes such as genomic imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. At the same time, aberrant CpG methylation has been shown to be associated with...

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

DNA Methylation: Bisulphite Modification and Analysis

The gold standard for DNA methylation analysis is genomic sequencing of bisulphite converted DNA. This method takes advantage of the increased sensitivity of cytosine compared with 5-methylcytosine (5-MeC) to bisulphite deamination under acidic conditions. Unmethylated cytosines can be distinguished from methylated cytosines after PCR amplification of the target genomic DNA.
