Quartz Capillary Mounting

Quartz capillary mounting is a technique for positioning small chemical samples inside thin-walled quartz tubes for analysis while minimizing sample loss and contamination. The sample is introduced into the capillary, centered or packed at a defined location, and secured by sealing or supporting the tube; quartz provides chemical resistance, thermal stability, and relatively low interference with many analytical measurements. This method is useful in X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and other experiments involving powders, crystals, liquids, or air-sensitive materials. Consistent mounting improves alignment, protects samples, and supports reliable structural and compositional characterization.

Source: Paolone, G., et al. Personalized Needles for Microinjections in the Rodent Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a rodent brain microneedle injection using a quartz microneedle with holes. The microneedle is attached to a syringe and micropump to control the delivery rate. The needle with the injection solution is inserted into the brain with the delivery speed set at low. Once positioned, the delivery speed is increased. The needle is withdrawn after a brief pause.

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE)

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a separation technique that separates molecules in an electric field according to size and charge. CE is performed in a small glass tube called a capillary that is filled with an electrolyte solution. Analytes are separated due to differences in electrophoretic mobility, which varies with charge, solvent viscosity, and size. Traditional electrophoresis in gels is limited in the amount of voltage...

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of capillaries from fresh porcine brains. The process involves removing the meninges, isolating the grey matter from the brain tissue, homogenizing and filtering the grey matter to isolate the capillaries, and finally using enzymatic digestion to purify the capillaries further.
