Beating Efficiency

Beating efficiency is a functional measure of how effectively a contractile tissue converts electrical activation into coordinated, force-generating motion. In developing cardiac tissues, excitation triggers calcium release, which enables actin–myosin interactions and synchronized contraction; beat rate, regularity, amplitude, and recovery can therefore indicate functional performance. Assessing beating efficiency helps researchers evaluate cardiomyocyte differentiation, maturation, and tissue organization during development. It also provides a quantitative readout for comparing genetic or environmental effects on heart formation and for testing how experimental conditions influence the development and function of cardiac models.

The study of music provides many examples of the superposition of waves and the constructive and destructive interference that occurs. Very few examples of music being performed consist of a single source playing a single frequency for an extended period of time. A single frequency of sound for an extended period might be monotonous to the point of irritation, similar to the unwanted drone of an aircraft engine or a loud fan. Music is pleasant and exciting due to mixing the changing frequencies...

Uncovering Beat Deafness: Detecting Rhythm Disorders with Synchronized Finger Tapping and Perceptual Timing Tasks

Behavioral tasks that allow for the assessment of perceptual and sensorimotor timing abilities in the general population (i.e., non-musicians) are presented. Synchronization of finger tapping to the beat of an auditory stimuli and detecting rhythmic irregularities provides a means of uncovering rhythm disorders.
