Capillary Network Characterization

Capillary network characterization is the quantitative assessment of the structure and organization of small blood-vessel networks, providing insight into how tissues establish and remodel their microcirculation. It typically combines microscopy with image analysis to measure vessel density, length, diameter, branching, connectivity, and spatial distribution from vascularized tissues or experimental models. In developmental biology, these measurements reveal how angiogenesis and vascular patterning change over time and respond to genetic or environmental cues. Comparing network features across developmental stages or conditions helps link vessel architecture with tissue growth, oxygen delivery, and morphogenesis, supporting research on normal development and vascular disorders.

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE)

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a separation technique that separates molecules in an electric field according to size and charge. CE is performed in a small glass tube called a capillary that is filled with an electrolyte solution. Analytes are separated due to differences in electrophoretic mobility, which varies with charge, solvent viscosity, and size. Traditional electrophoresis in gels is limited in the amount of voltage...

This video demonstrates the isolation of capillaries from fresh porcine brains. The process involves removing the meninges, isolating the grey matter from the brain tissue, homogenizing and filtering the grey matter to isolate the capillaries, and finally using enzymatic digestion to purify the capillaries further.

Primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were grown to confluence within a microfluidic network device. The endothelial cell junction and F-actin distributions were illustrated and the changes in intracellular calcium concentration and nitric oxide production in response to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were quantified in real-time at individual cell levels.
