Fixed Cell Staining

Fixed cell staining is a laboratory technique used to preserve cellular structure and selectively visualize molecules after cells have been immobilized, enabling reproducible microscopic analysis. Fixatives such as paraformaldehyde stabilize cells by cross-linking or precipitating cellular components, while permeabilization can allow dyes or antibodies to reach intracellular targets; fluorescent labels then reveal the distribution of nuclei, proteins, or other structures. In developmental biology, the method supports comparisons of cell shape, tissue organization, and changing gene or protein expression across embryos and model systems. These observations help connect cellular organization with developmental processes and identify abnormalities in tissue formation.
