Susceptible Mouse Strains

Susceptible mouse strains are genetically defined laboratory mice that develop infection or disease more readily than resistant strains, making them important models in immunology and infection research. Their susceptibility reflects strain-dependent differences in innate and adaptive immunity, including pathogen recognition, cytokine responses, antigen presentation, and immune regulation, which can influence pathogen replication and disease severity. Researchers use these strains to examine host–pathogen interactions, identify protective immune mechanisms, evaluate vaccines and antimicrobial treatments, and compare outcomes across genetic backgrounds. Careful characterization of susceptibility helps distinguish microbial effects from host factors and improves interpretation of experimental disease models.

This protocol outlines the cefoperazone mouse model of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) using a clinically-relevant and genetically-tractable strain, R20291. Emphasis on clinical disease monitoring, C. difficile bacterial enumeration, toxin cytotoxicity, and histopathological changes throughout CDI in a mouse model are detailed in the protocol.

Overcoming Unresponsiveness in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) Resistant Mouse Strains by Adoptive Transfer and Antigenic Challenge

Certain mouse strains are able to resist induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) with myelin basic protein. Described here is a simple immunization protocol that reverses the unresponsiveness and induces paralytic disease in several typical EAE resistant mouse stains.

Morris Water Maze Test: Optimization for Mouse Strain and Testing Environment

This manuscript describes a Morris water maze (MWM) protocol tailored for use with a commonly used mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. The MWM is widely used in transgenic mouse models. Implementation of a procedure sensitive to the background strain of the mouse model is essential for detecting group differences.

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

Stimulation of the Intracardiac Nervous System to Assess Susceptibility to Arrhythmia

Source: Jungen, C., et al. Impact of Intracardiac Neurons on Cardiac Electrophysiology and Arrhythmogenesis in an Ex Vivo Langendorff System. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).The video demonstrates an ex vivo technique for stimulating the intracardiac nervous system to assess the heart’s susceptibility to arrhythmia. Using a perfusion apparatus, an isolated mouse heart is perfused with an oxygenated buffer. The intracardiac nervous system is then stimulated at a high frequency to induce arrhythmias.
