Stepwise Functions

Stepwise functions are mathematical functions that remain constant over specified intervals and change value at distinct boundary points, making them useful for representing quantities that shift in discrete stages rather than continuously. They are typically defined piecewise, with each rule applying over a particular interval; at a boundary, the function may jump to a new level, as in floor and ceiling functions. In mathematics, stepwise functions help model thresholds, ranges, and categorical conditions, while their graphs support analysis of discontinuities, domains, and transformations. They also provide simple approximations of more complex functions and appear in algorithms, measurement systems, economics, and engineering.
