Cardiac Structure Analysis

Cardiac structure analysis is the systematic evaluation of the heart’s chambers, walls, valves, and major vessels to identify normal anatomy and structural abnormalities. In medicine, clinicians use modalities such as echocardiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to create anatomical views, with each method relying on principles such as ultrasound reflection, X-ray attenuation, or magnetic resonance signal differences between tissues. This analysis supports the diagnosis and classification of congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathies, valvular disease, and other conditions that alter cardiac form. It also guides treatment planning, monitors disease progression, and strengthens understanding of how structural changes affect cardiac function.

Structure of Cardiac Muscles

2025

Cardiac muscle, or myocardium, is a specialized type of muscle found exclusively in the heart. Its unique structural and functional characteristics enable the heart to perform its vital role of pumping blood throughout the body continuously and rhythmically. The cardiac muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, possess an endomysium and perimysium but do not have an epimysium. Compared to skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle cells are small and mostly have a single nucleus. Additionally, they are usually...

We describe a correlative microscopy method that combines high-speed 3D live-cell fluorescent light microscopy and high-resolution cryo-electron tomography. We demonstrate the capability of the correlative method by imaging dynamic, small HIV-1 particles interacting with host HeLa cells.

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...
