Closed Chest Catheterization

Closed chest catheterization is a minimally invasive medical procedure that places a catheter through the chest wall into the pleural space to remove air, blood, or fluid and restore normal lung expansion. After local anesthesia and sterile preparation, the catheter is advanced between the ribs and connected to a drainage system, often using an underwater seal or controlled suction to permit outward flow while limiting air entry. This technique is used to manage pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, and postoperative thoracic drainage. Proper placement and monitoring help reestablish negative intrapleural pressure, improve breathing, and reduce complications associated with pleural-space disorders.

Surgical trauma induces an inflammatory response. Cytokines and endogenous ligands are known to modulate myocardial infarct size following ischemia and reperfusion. We present a modified closed-chest model of murine ischemia and reperfusion using hanging weights to minimize effects of thoracotomy.

A Rat Model of Ventricular Fibrillation and Resuscitation by Conventional Closed-chest Technique

This article describes a rat model of electrically-induced ventricular fibrillation and resuscitation by chest compression, ventilation, and delivery of electrical shocks that simulates an episode of sudden cardiac arrest and conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The model enables gathering insights on the pathophysiology of cardiac arrest and exploration of new resuscitation strategies.

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.
