Direct Segmental Delivery

Direct Segmental Delivery is a localized medical approach that places a therapeutic agent directly within or adjacent to a defined anatomical segment, rather than distributing it broadly through the body. By using targeted injection, catheter-based administration, or another site-specific route, the method concentrates treatment at the intended tissue and can reduce exposure to non-target regions. This strategy supports regional therapy when precise dosing, limited systemic effects, or improved access to a difficult-to-reach site is important. Its applications may include delivering drugs, biologics, or other interventions to selected organs, tissues, or neural segments, providing a foundation for more precise and potentially safer treatment designs.

2017

A unique rat liver hilar clamp model was developed for studying the impact of pharmacologic molecules in ameliorating ischemia-reperfusion injury. This model includes direct cannulation of the portal supply to the ischemic liver segment via a branch of the portal vein, allowing for direct hepatic delivery.

We describe a method to target drugs to the central nervous system by either implanting a catheter or performing a bolus injection into the right lateral ventricle in mice. We focus specifically on the delivery of antisense oligonucleotides. This technique is readily adaptable to other drugs and to rats.

A mouse model of human endoscopic skull base reconstruction has been developed that creates a semipermeable interface between the brain and nose using nasal mucosal grafts. This method allows researchers to study delivery to the central nervous system of high molecular weight therapeutics which are otherwise excluded by the blood-brain barrier when administered systemically.
