Toxic Compound Handling

Toxic compound handling is the controlled identification, use, storage, transport, and disposal of substances that can harm people or the environment. In medicine, safe handling relies on hazard assessment, clearly labeled containers, appropriate personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and procedures that prevent exposure through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or accidental injection. Staff also use containment, spill-response protocols, waste segregation, and decontamination to limit contamination and protect patients, colleagues, and laboratory settings. These practices support the safe preparation of medicines, toxicology research, clinical testing, and hazardous-drug administration while reducing occupational exposure and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Evaluating the Neuroprotective Effects of a Test Compound Against Alpha-Synuclein Toxicity in Rat Embryonic Neurons

2025

Start with a primary midbrain culture from rat embryos, containing dopaminergic neurons that overexpress mutated alpha-synuclein.Replace the media in the treatment wells with fresh media containing the test compound, and that in the control wells with plain media. Then incubate. In the control, alpha-synuclein forms toxic aggregates in dopaminergic neurons, causing neurite retraction and leading to neuronal death. In the treatment, the test compound interacts with alpha-synuclein, prevents its...

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A mineral acid (or inorganic acid) is defined as a water-soluble acid derived from inorganic minerals by chemical reaction as opposed to organic acids (e.g. acetic acid, formic acid). Examples of mineral acids include: • Boric acid (CAS No.10043-35-3) • Chromic acid (CAS No.1333-82-0) • Hydrochloric acid (CAS No.7647-01-0) • Hydrofluoric acid (CAS No. 7664-39-3) • Nitric acid (CAS No. 7697-37-2) •...

Handling Chemical Spills

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Since chemicals are commonly used for laboratory research purposes, it is extremely important to be adequately prepared to handle chemical spills or accidental release of hazardous chemicals, which can happen at any time. No matter how minor a spill may be, the inability to respond in an emergency situation could severely endanger public health or the environment. All chemical spills must be properly...

Rapid Evaluation of Toxicity of Chemical Compounds Using Zebrafish Embryos

2019

Zebrafish embryos are used for evaluating the toxicity of chemical compounds. They develop externally and are sensitive to chemicals, allowing detection of subtle phenotypic changes. The experiment only requires a small amount of compound, which is directly added to the plate containing embryos, making the testing system efficient and cost-effective.

Larval Locomotion Assay: High-Throughput Method to Study Neurobehavioral Toxicity of a Compound in Zebrafish Larvae
