Volume-weighted Sampling

Volume-weighted sampling is a sampling method in which larger structures or regions contribute more strongly to selection or analysis than smaller ones, making it useful when volume represents biological importance. In medical research, the approach commonly assigns each unit a probability proportional to its volume, often by selecting random locations within a tissue or anatomical reference space and identifying the structure occupying each location. This principle supports quantitative histology, stereology, medical imaging, and tumor or organ analysis by improving estimates of volume distributions and reducing underrepresentation of large structures. It is especially valuable for characterizing heterogeneous tissues and interpreting spatial changes in disease.

Weighted Mean

2023

While taking the arithmetic, geometric, or harmonic mean of a sample data set, equal importance is assigned to all the data points. However, all the values may not always be equally important in some data sets. An intrinsic bias might make it more important to give more weightage to specific values over others. For example, consider the number of goals scored in the matches of a tournament. While computing the average number of goals scored in the tournament, it may be more important to...

Understanding Concentration and Measuring Volumes
