Astrocyte Markers

Astrocyte markers are cellular proteins, genes, or other features used to identify astrocytes, the glial cells that support neuronal function and maintain the brain’s extracellular environment. In neuroscience research, markers such as GFAP, S100β, ALDH1L1, AQP4, and GLT-1 are detected through immunostaining, gene-expression analysis, or fluorescent labeling, although their expression can vary with brain region, developmental stage, and reactive state. These markers help researchers distinguish astrocytes from other neural cells, map their distribution, and assess changes after injury, inflammation, or disease. Using complementary markers improves cell classification and supports studies of neurodevelopment, neural circuits, and gliopathology.

Ischemic stroke is a complex event in which the specific contribution of astrocytes to the affected brain region exposed to oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) is difficult to study. This article introduces a methodology to obtain isolated astrocytes and study their reactivity and proliferation under OGD conditions.
