Awake Rat Surgery

Awake rat surgery is a neuroscience method in which selected surgical procedures are performed while a rat remains conscious, enabling researchers to study neural function without the broad physiological effects of general anesthesia. After habituation to handling and restraint, researchers maintain aseptic conditions and provide appropriate analgesia while accessing the brain or implanting recording devices, preserving interactions between neural activity and behavior. This approach supports chronic electrophysiology, neural recording during behavioral tasks, and experiments that link circuit activity with perception, movement, or learning, making it valuable for translational neuroscience and studies requiring awake, behaving animals.
