Bone Flap Creation

Bone flap creation is a neurosurgical technique in which a section of the skull is temporarily removed to provide access to the brain while preserving the bone for later replacement. Surgeons typically outline the intended opening, create burr holes, and use a craniotome to cut between them; after the intracranial procedure, the bone flap is repositioned and secured with plates, screws, or other fixation devices. This approach supports operations for brain tumors, vascular abnormalities, traumatic injuries, and other conditions requiring controlled access to neural tissue. Proper flap handling helps restore skull integrity and protect the brain during recovery.

To date, thick tissue defects are typically reconstructed by applying autologous tissue flaps or engineered tissues. In this protocol, we present a new method for engineering vascularized tissue flap bearing an autologous pedicle, to serve as a substitute to autologous flaps.

An Experimental Human DIEP Flap Model to Investigate Preservation Strategies for Vascularized Composite Allografts and Free Flaps

This protocol describes the surgical technique for harvesting a human perforator flap model based on the deep inferior epigastric artery pedicle, intended for experimental research.

Coronoid-Temporalis Pedicled Flap for Orbital Floor Defect Reconstruction

This protocol presents a novel coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap (CTPF) technique for reconstructing small-to-medium orbital floor defects. CTPF avoids microvascular risks while maintaining biomechanical stability. Clinical cases demonstrate effective structural restoration, reduced complications, and preserved facial symmetry, offering a viable alternative to traditional grafts or alloplastic materials.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.
