Interface Chamber

An interface chamber is an ex vivo preparation system that maintains living neural tissue, especially acute brain slices, at the boundary between oxygenated gas and a thin film of physiological solution. In this configuration, humidified carbogen provides direct gas exchange while artificial cerebrospinal fluid supplies nutrients, ions, and controlled perfusion, helping preserve tissue viability and synaptic function during experiments. Interface chambers support extracellular and intracellular electrophysiology, pharmacological studies, and investigations of neural circuits under experimentally controlled conditions. By sustaining functional brain tissue outside the organism, they enable researchers to examine neuronal signaling, network activity, and responses to drugs or other interventions with precise access to the preparation.

Protein-protein Interfaces

2020

Many proteins form complexes to carry out their functions, making protein-protein interactions (PPIs) essential for an organism's survival. Most PPIs are stabilized by numerous weak noncovalent chemical forces. The physical shape of the interfaces determines the way two proteins interact. Many globular proteins have closely-matching shapes on their surfaces, which form a large number of weak bonds. Additionally, many PPIs occur between two helices or between a surface cleft and a polypeptide...

2015

A microfabricated device with sealable femtoliter-volume reaction chambers is described. This report includes a protocol for sealing cell-free protein synthesis reactants inside these chambers for the purpose of understanding the role of crowding and confinement in gene expression.

Chambers of the Heart

2025

The human heart is a complex organ made up of four chambers: the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. These internal chambers are separated by partitions known as the interatrial and interventricular septa. The exterior of the heart features a groove known as the coronary sulcus that demarcates the atria from the ventricles, while the anterior and posterior interventricular sulci distinguish between the two ventricles. Deoxygenated blood from the body is received in the right...
