Multichannel Neural Stimulation

Multichannel neural stimulation is a neuroscience technique that delivers controlled electrical or other physical stimuli through multiple recording or stimulation channels to influence neural activity across distributed circuits. By independently adjusting the timing, intensity, waveform, and spatial pattern of stimulation, researchers can activate, inhibit, or synchronize selected populations of neurons and examine how network responses change. This approach supports studies of neural coding, connectivity, plasticity, and circuit dynamics, while also informing the development of brain-computer interfaces and neuromodulation therapies. Coordinated stimulation across channels can reveal how interactions among brain regions contribute to sensation, movement, cognition, and neurological function.

This video demonstrates the use of an extracellular matrix-coated microfluidic chip to differentiate neural stem and progenitor cells or NPCs through electrical stimulation. After seeding and adhering to the coated region, NPCs grow, and the application of a direct current triggers their differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes.
